SpaceX has released a new animation of its Falcon Heavy rocket, which is targeted for first flight later this year. Falcon Heavy will place payloads of up to 117,000 pounds into Low Earth Orbit, more than any American rocket since the Saturn V. More significantly, it will incorporate reusable boosters to reduce launch costs.

SpaceX is claiming the Falcon Heavy is the most powerful rocket of any in operation today yet it has never flown. The Delta IV Heavy is the most powerful rocket today and has been flying since 2004. If the Falcon Heavy flies before the SLS in 2017 it will be able to make that claim.

I also have a problem with people claiming vehicle abilities that are yet unproven. That SLS supporters may be the leading offenders doesn’t excuse others of the same offense.

The FH should be flying in just a few month. It is almost entirely using F9 parts that have been prove. What I am really anxious to see is the reusable that promises to greatly lower cost to orbit. We would have seen the first but for a few quarts of hydraulic fluid or a few seconds. That has already been fixed. Hope to see it land on the bullseye in a few months.

SpaceX is a private company, and its CEO has proven trustworthy. It will fly, and SpaceX will build bigger things. We are talking about a new Era of Space Flight. The commercial era. The private era.
